#174 - The Sandbox Adventure

Growth happens in the sandbox. It’s where you take risks, build, and learn about yourself. You don’t need to know everything or have a perfect plan. You just need to step in, get your hands dirty, and start creating.

Today, I’m sharing the story of my six-month recharge.

Six months that pulled me out of my comfort zone and into a world of new challenges, new skills, and new possibilities. This wasn’t a vacation—it was six months of diving into the sandbox, experimenting, and solving problems I’d never faced before.

And here’s the thing: If I can do this, you can too. So, join me on this creative adventure as we look ahead to 2025 and all the possibilities waiting for us.

This is the story of my six-month recharge —-- six months that transformed how I think, work, and approach challenges. This wasn’t a break or a vacation. It was six months of diving into the sandbox—learning, experimenting, and tackling problems I’d never faced before. I stepped out of irrigation and into the fast-moving world of IoT.

The Sandbox Adventure Here’s what happened:

  • I invented new IoT products. I developed a wireless cloud solution to connect industrial weigh scales to the cloud—something that hadn’t been done before.

  • I learned to set up a Raspberry Pi. This opened the door to new technical possibilities.

  • I dove into LoRa. I explored how this long-range wireless technology is shaping IoT.

  • I attended the largest LoRa conference in Amsterdam. It gave me a front-row seat to the next big technology curve.

In six months, I gained more skills than in the last six years.

Why the Sandbox Matters

This wasn’t just about learning new skills—it was about embracing the unknown. The sandbox is where you play, experiment, and solve problems without fear of failure. It’s where you push boundaries and ask, What if? These six months pulled me away from irrigation and into the broader IoT world, where the future is being built.

Here’s what I want you to take away from this: Growth happens in the sandbox. It’s where you take risks, build, and learn about yourself. You don’t need to know everything or have a perfect plan. You just need to step in, get your hands dirty, and start creating.

If I can do this, you can too.

2025 is your year to play in your own sandbox, to learn, grow, and build something extraordinary. So, let’s do this together. Join me on this creative adventure.

The sandbox is waiting, and the best part? You’re already holding the tools.

[00:00:08] Welcome back, welcome back, welcome, welcome, hello, hello. This is a pod. It's a podcast.

[00:00:17] Welcome back to The Sprinkler Nerd Show, my friends. Welcome to the last episode of 2024.

[00:00:26] I'm gonna start this episode off with a question for you. Have you ever felt stuck? Seems silly.

[00:00:35] Of course, everyone's felt stuck. But seriously, have you ever felt stuck? Like, when you do the same thing every day, every week, every month, every year, and possibly you're not growing or learning?

[00:00:54] And maybe we should define growing. Not everybody needs to grow. I guess I define it as learning.

[00:01:01] I guess for me, feeling stuck means not learning. And I've always tried to put myself in a position to learn. Love, I love learning.

[00:01:15] I hate school. But I love learning. Isn't that a conflict of interest or a contrast? I love learning, but I hate school.

[00:01:26] Anyway, that's a side tangent. I'm prefacing this episode because you haven't heard from me since roughly, I haven't looked this up, June, if I'm not mistaken.

[00:01:38] So I took a six month podcast sabbatical. And as I think about the reason why, it's, I couldn't actually put my finger on it. I guess I just, I just became sort of not interested in it anymore.

[00:02:02] And I, and as I started to ask myself questions, why? It's because I wasn't, I wasn't learning anymore. Part of the interest and the fun of the podcast for so long was because it was new, it was novel.

[00:02:18] It was something I had to figure out each piece along the way. So it was constant learning, constant learning. And then it kind of became more like repetition.

[00:02:30] And so I, I guess I needed to put myself back in a position of constant learning, which meant taking a break from the podcast and focusing on some other areas in, in, uh, I guess my life, business life, but mostly places of creativity, places where I could be creative and learn.

[00:02:56] And so coming back around, have you ever felt stuck? If you have, then this episode is for you as I close out 2024 and welcome in 2025, because I would like to share a concept with you that I've been thinking a lot about.

[00:03:18] And it's the simple concept. And it's the simple concept. And the concept is the sandbox. And for me personally, where I thrive, where I am, where I get the, some of the most satisfaction is when I can play, let's say like playing in a sandbox where I can learn, where I can pick up a shovel and just start digging and see what I can build.

[00:03:48] I don't need anyone showing me how to use the shovel. I don't need anyone showing me how to use the shovel. I just want to put the shovel in my hand and start digging and see what I can build, see what I can create, see what I see, how I can use this shovel, see how I can, how I can use these tools, whatever these tools might be and learn.

[00:04:07] And then share with others like I'm sharing here with you.

[00:05:07] A whole world of new skills, new possibilities that are out there for anyone. Not just me, your interest could be in something completely different. But if you think it, you can be it, you can create it.

[00:05:28] And that to me is what getting unstuck is all about for me personally. It could be different for you.

[00:05:34] So I share this because I would like you to join me in 2025 as I focus more on living life in the sandbox.

[00:05:45] Well, not in the sandbox, but treating life as if it was one ginormous sandbox.

[00:05:52] It doesn't have a box. It doesn't have any barriers. It's just everything you do can be an experiment, which means there's always room for failure, which means there's no fear of failure.

[00:06:04] There's only trying. There's only learning. There's only thinking about something that makes sense to you and then thinking about it from the complete opposite perspective and wondering how that could be true.

[00:06:18] How could two opposing thoughts be both true in the same moment? Those kinds of creative concepts.

[00:06:28] So what I'm going to do is I'm going to share my six-month recharge story, if you will, in a three-minute song.

[00:06:41] I haven't created the song yet. I hope it's not too cheesy.

[00:06:47] And I wish everyone a fantastic close on 2024.

[00:06:55] And I wish everyone the best going into 2025, the best that you can make it.

[00:07:04] Make it your own amazing 2025.

[00:07:11] And I think I'm not going to make any promises to everyone, but what I would like to do is just share a little bit about some of the stuff that I've been working on that is related to irrigation.

[00:07:26] But a lot of it's not related to irrigation, but it can be and was very sort of technical, which there's the tech, technology, technical.

[00:07:40] And I guess I just want to share it because if I can do it, you can do it too.

[00:07:44] Whatever might seem really difficult is totally possible.

[00:07:49] You can do it.

[00:07:50] And I think with that, guys, let's pause here.

[00:07:57] I'm going to jump off and we'll play this little jingle I created.

[00:08:02] Have an awesome evening.

[00:08:04] Have an awesome evening.

[00:08:06] Closing out 2024.

[00:08:08] And I can't wait to reconnect with all of you in 2025.

[00:08:15] Today, I'm sharing the story of my six-month recharge.

[00:08:19] Six months that pulled me out of my comfort zone and in a world of new challenges, new skills, and new possibilities.

[00:08:26] This wasn't a vacation.

[00:08:27] It was six months of diving into the sandbox, experimenting and solving problems I'd never faced before.

[00:08:33] And here's the thing.

[00:08:35] If I can do this, you can too.

[00:08:38] So join me on this creative adventure as you go ahead to 2025 and all the possibilities waiting for us.

[00:08:46] This is the story of my six-month transformed.

[00:08:51] How I think it was six months of diving into the sandbox world of IoT.

[00:09:18] I developed a wireless cloud solution to connect and thus explore how this long-range wireless technology is shaping IoT.

[00:09:36] I attended the launch six months.

[00:09:45] I gained more skills than I had in the last six years.

[00:10:14] Here's what I want you to take away from this.

[00:10:17] Growth happens in the sandbox.

[00:10:19] It's why you take risks.

[00:10:21] Build and learn about yourself.

[00:10:23] You don't need to know everything or have a perfect plan.

[00:10:27] You just need to step in, get your hands dirty, and start creating.

[00:10:33] If I can do this, you can too.

[00:10:35] We're here to play in your own sandbox.

[00:10:39] So learn, grow, and build.

[00:10:43] So let's do this together.

[00:10:45] Join me on this creative adventure.

[00:10:47] The sandbox is waiting.

[00:10:49] You're already holding the tools.

[00:11:05] Join me on this creative adventure.

[00:11:07] The sandbox is waiting.

[00:11:09] And the best part, you're already holding the tools.
